Our Take On Paleo

Our Take On Paleo

A few years ago, my wife was reading Living Low Carb (Johnny Bowden) while I was reading Eat The Yolks (Liz Wolfe & Diane Sanfilippo) and Death By Food Pyramid (Denise Minger).  We soon learned that my sister-in-law was reading The Big Fat Surprise (Nina Teicholz).  When we all started talking diet we had a LOT in common!

Since then, my wife and I have no fear of fat, embrace our fresh veggies more than ever, and consume modest amounts of animal parts.  We’re not those bacon-obsessed paleo types you run into online.  So fresh veggies are the core of our diet, with meats and full fat whatever as additions.  My adoption of bulletproof coffee fits right in.

Unlike my wife, who can happily eat a big salad and a bowlful of veggies with chicken, I still like what I call “bread-like substance”, better known as gluten free bread.  Not just ANY gluten free bread, though.  The less processed and easier to pronounce the ingredients are, the better.  Recently I happened upon a frozen bread at the Kroger store by a woman-owned start-up called Base Culture, which of course is grain-free.  It’s also a smallish, dense loaf, with a slightly sweet taste.  The slices are very thin.  While exploring their website, I signed up for notifications and specials.  Well their Memorial Day sale was generous, so I ordered enough to qualify for free shipping.  Oddly, it took them 6 days to ship my box, but it arrived two days later — see photos.

Arriving in two days was expected, though, as the company is in Clearwater FL just a few miles from where I grew up.  Ideal for ordering food that’s prone to spoilage, and it all went straight into the fridge as the package insert suggested.  I’ve never bought “granola’ in a jar, and don’t much care for plastic jars, but it really is sticky and delicious.  So are the pumpkin bread and banana bread, with a mild sweetness and pleasant flavor.  I’ll order again when this stash is happily consumed.

Update of Sep 2018: A lengthy blog post by health blogger Robyn Openshaw counters the whole bacon-wrapped chicken paleo lifestyle.  In this post, she quotes from many of her interviews with noted health authorities concerning the paleo diet and the ketogenic diet fad.  After reading that post, I’m glad that we haven’t gone truly meat-centric carb-bashing paleo!
